Some Thoughts on Lists and Knowing When to Say YES!
A fun (or not so fun) fact about me is that I am OBSESSED with lists.
I literally have lists for everything. Quick weeknight meal ideas, yep. To-do lists. Obviously. Grocery lists. Books to read. Quotes I love. Early morning ramblings. Places to explore.
That one though. The ‘places to explore' list is maybe my favorite.
I create a calendar of the upcoming year and even a (very) rough look at the next few years. I fill the months in with major events, holidays, things I know we have planned, annnnnd then . . . the fun part!
I peak at the bottom of the list where I keep a running list of weekend adventures, bucket list destinations, day trips, trails i want to explore, restaurants, museums or beaches we want to check out and start plugging them in to different time slots throughout the year.
Nothing set in stone, just a time where we may actually be able to pull it off.
And not only does it help carve out space for those things to happen, it also gives me something to look forward to! And the research shows that having something positive to look forward to can reduce your stress AND boost your overall mood!
Because as humans we are very future focused.
Which is not always a good thing, hello anxiety! But having something to look forward to, no matter how small, can actually make you feel better in the present.
Just the thought of something positive actually triggers the release of dopamine in your brain and can even make you feel as happy as the actual experience, wild right?!
And it doesn’t have to be a weekend away.
Maybe it’s getting takeout from your favorite restaurant, meeting a friend for coffee, trying out a new hiking trail, movie night, exchanging letters with friends . . .whatever it is for you, be intentional about pursuing the things that bring you joy!
It’s all a balancing act, you don’t have to go, go, go all the time . . . It’s important to allow yourself time to do nothing at all if that’s what feels good, but know when to say yes too!
Here’s to doing more of the things that light your soul on fire in 2023!
